Standing still is progress
Our story
Sense of Place, founded by Joop Mulder (1953-2021), is a cultural development organization that believes that art is a powerful tool to connect people with their environment, create awareness and contribute to a sustainable and liveable future for the Wadden area. Sense of Place strengthens the unique qualities of this area with visual arts and design projects. Together with residents and the landscape, we tell the story of the North through these projects. The history of the area and residents, the landscape and the future.
Sense of Place visualizes the unique values of nature, landscape and cultural history of the special UNESCO World Heritage Wadden area to a wider audience. This will give the region an economic and social impulse at the same time. Sense of Place sometimes initiate projects but more often it supports initiatives from the local communities. The projects respect the culture and nature of the area and tell the story of the location and the landscape. They thus give the place extra appeal and meaning: a Sense of Place.
Artists, landscape architects, researchers, residents, users, social organisations, entrepreneurs, nature conservation organizations and governments are brought into contact with each other to jointly shape cultural landscape development in an innovative way.
Organisation
Sense of Place is a foundation with a governance model. A network organization that, in response to a question/request/task, looks for a connection and/or the right persons or organizations to implement it. There is also the possibility to initiate projects ourselves and we also work on commission.

Support
Sense of Place collaborates with the landscape and everyone who belongs to it. This results in projects that are freely accessible. All we ask in return is that you visit these places with attention and experience your own sense of place.
If you would like and are able to contribute more, a financial donation is very welcome. It allows us to continue responding, questioning, researching, and connecting.
Make
Art – landscape art – acts as a catalyst for both the opportunities and challenges facing the area. After all, it enhances the beauty and appeal of the coastal strip. It generates visitors and attention, strengthens the economy and improves quality of life. It tells residents and visitors the story of the Wadden Sea coast. It makes them aware of the landscape and nature. And its potential and vulnerability. It stimulates discussion, encourages reflection, connects parties and communities, and makes challenges tangible. There are many parties that shape the landscape in one way or another, ranging from the Department of Public Works to local village interests. In area development, it is therefore important that the “arts” are an integral part of the plan development. In the coming years, Sense of Place will strive to promote this importance and become part of planning and/or project teams.
