Bosk
More than a thousand trees moved through the streets of Leeuwarden
For 100 days, the hart of the city of Leeuwarden was green. From May 7 to August 14, 2022, more than 1000 large and small trees walked through the city center. The ‘walking’ forest gives the trees – and with it nature – a voice: how does the forest look at the human world? Bosk’s slow-moving art installation draws attention to the need to look at the relationship between man and nature differently. To make other choices in the greening of our public space, and to plant more trees in the world to help turn the climate crisis around.
The squares in the city were the clearings in the forest, which were embellished by cultural activities that reinforced the story of the walking forest. In addition to setting up a cultural, educational and in-depth program, Bosk was also the initiator of all kinds of green initiatives in the center and suburbs of Leeuwarden, and in the province of Fryslân.
Together with participants, neighborhoods, villages, associations, entrepreneurs and organizations, Bosk strives for a greener future by planting a lot of trees. For example, the trees and the thousands of seedlings of the walking forest all received a permanent place in the municipality of Leeuwarden and the province of Fryslân after August 2022.
This autonomous work of art was initiated by the late Joop Mulder (Sense of Place) and conceived by Bruno Doedens (SLeM) and a project by Arcadia.
About Bruno Doedens
Bruno Doedens (1959) studied at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam, with a specialization in Landscape Architecture. In 1990 he wins the base prize Prix de Rome – Landscape Architecture. In 1993, together with Maike van Stiphout, he founded the DS agency that wins the international competition for two parks at Potzdamer Platz in Berlin. Both have been realized. In 2005 Doedens continues independently, since 2007 as an initiator and artistic leader of Slem. In addition to expertise and craftsmanship, imagination is central to all his projects. The fascination to ‘make the impossible’, or ‘to make wine from water’, and the attention to the longer term and social and cultural values, predominate.
