Gaia
Sense of Place presented Gaia by Luke Jerram, during Arcadia 2022
“A new perspective on our place on earth”
Gaia is a travelling artwork by British artist Luke Jerram. The artwork has been exhibited in world cities such as London, Rome, Paris, Melbourne, Shanghai and Washington. Gaia has a diameter of seven metres and features 120 dpi detailed NASA images of the Earth’s surface. The artwork offers the opportunity to see our planet on this scale, floating in three dimensions. The work offers a new perspective on our place on Earth; a sense that everyone and everything on Earth is connected and that we have a responsibility to each other. It makes us think about the question: how do we treat our Earth and what is our relationship with nature. “When you feel the connection with your environment and nature, you also care for it,” explains Wendy Gooren of Sense of Place. “More than ever, this is now of great importance.”
