Golf van Termunterzijl

“A wide view broadens the mind”

As a Landmark, the Golf van Termunterzijl does not tell its own story, but lets the landscape and its inhabitants tell their story. Visitors discover and experience the area from different perspectives while walking through the Kleine Polder and over the ‘Golf’. The connection between the land and the sea, the (inner and outer) dikes. The history of Termuntenzijl and Termunten in the form of, among other things, the Boog van Ziel (the old lock) and the Ursus Church of Termunten from the 12th century, both bordering the polder.

Commissioned by the Het Groninger Landschap foundation, Sense of Place worked with Observatorium Rotterdam on a definitive design for a Landmark in the Kleine Polder near the villages of Termunten and Termunterzijl. These are villages on the Wadden coast in the Eems Dollard area in the province of Groningen. This special Landmark strengthens the identity and history of the Kleine Polder and the surrounding area. This ensures that residents and recreational users become more aware of the special environment in which they find themselves, and that they may look at the relationship between people and the landscape in a different way.

About Observatorium
Artists’ group Observatorium from Rotterdam, founded in 1997, is a studio for art in public space and place-making. The partners of the partnership are Geert van de Camp, Andre Dekker, Lieven Poutsma and Ruud Reutelingsperger, with backgrounds in visual arts, architecture, literature and education.
Observatorium stands for works of art where you can experience the workings of the imagination in the public domain and are seduced to a moment of stillness and undivided attention for the world around it.
Each member has his own intuition, preference, knowledge and skills and brings these into the development of a work of art. In this way, they can create multiple, multidisciplinary images for complex situations of spatial planning and design.

De Golf van Termunterzijl is a cooperation between Stichting Het Groninger Landschap, Observatorium Rotterdam and Sense of Place. For more information about Golf van Termunterzijl see Uitkijktorens.nl
