Water Experience- Sense of Place

Water

Just like people, water has the ability to remember. It is the source of all life, and yet we (rightly) fear it. In 1717, the Christmas Flood in Groningen claimed more than 2,500 lives. In memory of this disaster, the church in Uithuizermeeden organises an annual theatre performance to keep the memory alive.

This installation is inspired by the ritual practice of lighting a candle (for someone) in church. However, we do not use fire, but (Wadden Sea) water. Visitors are invited to soak a piece of cloth in water – in memory of a loved one, a specific place, or simply out of curiosity. This water drips slowly into a bowl, where a hidden underwater microphone captures and amplifies the sound.
When the water hits the basin, the sound of dripping echoes throughout the church via a sound system. As long as the water is running, the space is filled with sound.

‘Water’ is a portable installation that will travel between various churches in the area.
