Robert Wilson - Sense of Place

Robert Wilson

Robert Wilson (USA 1941–2025) was an influential theater and opera director, visual artist, and scenographer. He is regarded as one of the most important innovators of the international performing arts field since the late 1960s.

Wilson was known for his highly visual, often slow and extremely precise theatrical language. Light plays a central role in his work, alongside minimalist movement, rigorous compositions, and an almost architectural approach to space, time, and silence. His productions focus less on traditional narratives and more on sensory experience and visual power.

He collaborated with numerous leading artists, writers, and musicians, including composers such as Philip Glass and performers from a wide range of disciplines. His work has been presented on the world’s most renowned international stages and opera houses.

In addition to his theater and opera productions, Wilson founded The Watermill Center, an interdisciplinary arts institute in New York where artists from around the world come together for research, experimentation, and exchange. It was here that he met Theun Mosk, with whom he developed the artworks for Soundings.
